Asian Connections: Girls Rising, Film Speaks Out for Girls Oppressed Around World

Freida PintoFrieda Pinto joins a cast of Hollywood greats who narrate the documentary, Girls Rising, the story of 66 million girls around the world who are not in school.

The film plays at selected Regal Cinemas across the country Apil 19 – 26, reports   Asian Connections.

“No one is more vulnerable than an uneducated girl, and this film is a wake-up call to the world that it’s time to educate girls,”  Pinto said to India-Times.com. “Right now, 66 million girls are not in school, and 14 million girls under 18 will be married this year — that’s 38,000 girls married today, and 13 girls married in the last 30 seconds.”

Others involved in the film according to Asian Connections include best selling author and Killing Fields survivor Loung Ung who wrote the Cambodian section of the film. The Cambodian American is an outspoken activist for human rights and has written two books about her early childhood experiences under the Pol Pot regime and her life in the United States.

Jenny Lee directed the Sierra Leone segment of Girls Rising.
