UPI: Asian American Students Outperform All Others in Math, Study Shows

SchoolGirls and boys in 10th-grade have similar performances in math and science. But Asian American students of both genders generally perform better than all other ethnicities, according to a recent study by U.S. university academicians.

The study was based on a sample of 367 white, African American, Latino and Asian American 10th-grade students in math and science. The results were published the Psychology of Women Quarterly.

“Asian American male adolescents consistently demonstrated the highest achievement compared to other adolescents, mirroring the ‘model minority’ stereotype,” according to the study. “In contrast, the underachievement of Latino and African American males was a persistent and troubling trend.”

However, when it comes to perception to their abilities in math and science, boys reported a greater perception of their own ability in math while girls reported greater confidence in science, according to the study. These findings don’t change among different ethnicities.
