A confirmation hearing is scheduled today in the Senate Judiciary Committee for a Indian American nominee to the US Court of Appeals.

Srikanth ‘Sri’ Srinivasan would be the first South Asian to ascend to a seat on the appeals court bench, according to the Daily News.

President Obama is said to be using all his political muscle to get the confirmation pushed along which has so far been stalled in the Senate.

“He is widely regarded as one of the best legal minds in the country.” said Rep Ami Bera (D-Ca)  “His integrity, wealth of experience, and education make him extremely well equipped to serve as a judge on the DC Circuit, one of our country’s most important courts,” he said.

Both the New York Times and Washington Post have published editorials in support of the nomination and say if Srinivasan is not confirmed, a confrontation over the nomination process could explode.

You can read more about that in the Daily News.
