Opening statements are expected to get underway today in the trial of two aides of the man who wants to become the first Asian American mayor of New York City, reports the Seattle Times.
The campaign treasurer of John Liu, Jia Jenny Hou, and former Liu fundraiser Xing “Oliver” Wu Pan are accused of accepting donations from straw donors who were later reimbursed for their contributions. Prosecutors say it was all part of a conspiracy to get around campaign finance limits.
The trial is expected to last several weeks. Liu(pictured here) himself has not been charged nor is he expected to testify. But the publicity surrounding the trial could hurt his chances in the election.
