In times of grief, this country is supposed to come together. But as Hammas Moses Khan blogs in the Huffington Post, some are coming together for the wrong reasons in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing.
#Muslims is trending on Twitter for reasons a sane society should find reprehensible. Calls for executions of Muslim Americans have been made. The terms Muslim and terrorism are being used interchangeably.
In response, Muslim Americans are urging their community to be vigilant, to use extra precaution until the tensions ease.
As Khan asserts, quoting President Obama, these moments remind us that “We are Americans — united in concern for our fellow citizen.”
Not only should we be concerned with the victims of the bombings and those charged with hunting down those behind this heinous act, we should give our support to Muslim Americans and those who might become innocent victims of this tragedy. One tragedy must not beget another. We as Americans must make sure of that.
