Herald & News: #JapaneseAmerican Detainee To Restore Jail at Tule Lake @TuleLakeNPS

Tule LakeA Japanese American incarcerated at Tule Lake during World War II and who was ordered to build the camp’s jail has returned to rebuild it to its original condition, according to the Herald & News.

“I built the jail and I’d like to see it brought back to its original state,” JimiYamaichi, 90, said. “I don’t want to see others go through that same thing. I think it’s a dark spot on our history.”

The Tule Lake Committee was awarded $192,467 grant to restore the jail, but the committee must first collect $100,000 in matching grants.

Work is expected to begin in two years.

“I’m not bitter, I’d just like to preserve it,” he said.

You can read more about the project as well as a related quilt exhibit in the Herald & News.
