ABS CBN: Pinoy Immigrant May Make Run for NY City Council

27-year old Filipino American Edward Santos is considering running for the New York City Council, reports ABS CBN

The young man got a first hand look at politics at an early age. His mother faced deportation, but fought to stay in the United States so that Santos could live the American dream. Her struggle caught the attention of US Senator Carl Levin who together with then Senator Joe Biden sponsored the “The Emilie Santos Bill.”

President Reagan signed the bill into law and his mother was granted permanent residency in the United States.

“It was a rare opportunity to see politics in action and how it can affect just a small family, so that was very important to me,” Santos said.

Santos is considering a run in District 8 in East Harlem-South Bronx. If elected, he would be the first Filipino American ever elected to the council.

“My district has a 17% unemployment rate, we have 1 in 7 kids not going to school, we have the highest crime rate in the area and I really want to change those things,” said Santos. “Having this opportunity to be able to experience whatever I want to do, run for office, to me is a dream come true.”
