Thousands attended a concert at the Comcast Arena in Everett, WA to raise awareness of domestic violence in the South Asian American community, reports Herald.net
“The first goal was to come out in the open and talk about (domestic violence),” said Arun Sharma, of Bothell, one of the organizers. “The intent was to raise awareness, raise some money and bring the South Asian communities together.”
The recent gang rape and murder of a 23-year old woman in New Delhi and the shooting of a 15-year old girl in Pakistan by the Taliban after she spoke out about the treatment of women inspired the concert.
API Chaya works with families experiencing abuse. Many South Asian families tend to hide these types of problems and do not speak openly about them, according to API Chaya.
