Mercury News: Asian Americans Hitting Glass Ceiling in Silicon Valley

CATEGORIES

High Tech CampusBuck Gee and Denise Peck, both former Vice Presidents  at Cisco, have some tough questions for the top CEOs of Silicon Valley.

In a blog co-authored with Vish Mishra, venture director at Clearstone Ventures, and  published in the  Mercury News,  the three ask if your work force is one demographic but your senior management is another, is there a glass ceiling?

The high tech work force in Silicon Valley is more than 50 percent Asian American, but their representation in the senior executive team is just 11 percent.  Asian American women make up just 1 percent of the board room and senior executives, while women in general make up at least 16 times more than that.

The three are optimistic that once CEOs agree to discuss this situation, solutions can be found. Once they agree to look at their own work force for their executive pipeline, the trend can be reversed.

But comments left by readers of the Mercury News show their ideas may meet some resistance.  From the inane, “maybe if they learn to drive,” to the familiar, “I would add a call to stop race and ethnicity-based whining,” opposition appears to be high.

Read their blog in the Mercury News and let us know what you think.
