Rep Colleen Hanabusa (D-Hawaii) made it official today, announcing she will run against Sen Brian Schatz in the Democratic primary, reports Hawaii News Now. Schatz was appointed to the position after the death of Senator Daniel Inouye despite the fact that Inouye had recommended Hanabusa succeed him.
The winner will finish out the final two years of Inouye’s term.
“This race will not be about personalities,” Hanabusa said. “It will be about service, experience, and effectiveness. I look forward to the campaign, and to continuing to represent Hawaii’s voice and values in Washington,”
A spokesman for Schatz said the Senator was ready for the challenge.
“Throughout the next 16 months, his service as Senator and his campaign will be about the kind of future we want for our families, our communities, and the next generation. We look forward to sharing the Senator’s work and vision for Hawaii, and we welcome Representative Hanabusa to the race.”
