UC Irvine fraternity Lambda Theta Delta has suspended itself for one year after producing a blackface video that has outraged many both on and outside campus, including many Asian Americans, reports OC Weekly.
In a statement, the fraternity said, “It is clear we have strayed from Lambda Theta Delta ideals of friendship, leadership and scholarship, service and most importantly cultural awareness. This decision is mainly due to the abhorrent, insensitive and highly offensive “blackface” video created by our members.
Members of Lambda Theta Delta met with the Black Student Union on campus and heard a discussion about the history of both blackface and racism on the UC Irvine campus.
The suspension means that all major activities until fall 2014 will be cancelled by Lambda Theta Delta.
“Cancelling these activities means we are focusing on addressing our attitudes, our values and our conduct.”
It is still possible additional sanctions could be imposed by the University which is conducting its own investigation.
