Asian immigration is shifting the demographic landscape of many Southern California suburbs, according to the NY Times.

Areas once dominated by whites and Latinos just 10 years ago are now Asian majority cities.

Twice as many immigrants to California now come from Asia than from Latin America.

In cities in the San Gabriel Valley as well as Orange County and Silicon Valley in Northern California, Asians are now the dominant cultural force.

“We are really looking at a different era here,” said Hans Johnson, a demographer with the Public Policy Institute of California. “There are astounding changes in working-class towns and old, established, wealthy cities. It is not confined to one place.”

These shifts have caused tensions in some areas. Jay Chen who ran against Republican incumbent congressman Ed Royce encountered anti-Asian slurs during the race.

You can read more about this demographic shift and some of the tensions it has created in the NY Times.
