Asian American officials are demanding that the San Gabriel City Council allow an elected Chinese American to take office, reports KPCC.
Chin-Ho Liao was elected in the March election, but a resident challenged the outcome saying Liao did not meet the residency requirement.
The Council which is made up of two candidates Liao challenged for the open seat and two incumbents who supported candidates other than Liao has prevented him from being sworn into office.
The council recently held a closed door hearing on the residency matter.
“Instead of holding this kangaroo court, the San Gabriel City Council needs to fulfill its obligation to seat Chin-Ho Liao immediately,” Representative Judy Chu (pictured here) said at a news conference.
She was joined by State Sen. Ed Hernandez, State Assemblyman Ed Chau and Community College Trustee Mike Eng.
A recent order from a Superior Court judge’s requires the City Council to install Liao in office by May 14, or prove to the court why he may not serve.
