NorthJersey.com: On Again, Off Again Comfort Women Memorial in New Jersey On Hold

Korean American Civic EmpowermentThe Fort Lee City Council in New Jersey is refusing to approve a comfort women memorial citing differences within the Korean American community, reports NorthJersey.com.

It had been thought those differences had been worked out, but the Korean American Civic Empowerment and Korean-American Vietnam War veterans group acknowledge difference remain despite concessions about the design and inscription on the memorial.

“I understand there are some divided ideas,” Douglas Kim, President of KACE, said. “I think it’s time the councilmen decide.”

But the council declined to take action due to the lack of consensus.

The memorial is designed to honor women forced to serve  in Japanese military brothels in World War II.

Meanwhile, residents of Fort Lee have launched a petition drive opposing the memorial.

You can read more about that in NorthJersey.com.
