Rafu Shimpo: Japanese Americans Making a Difference Through Art

Great LeapNobuko Miyamoto didn’t intend for her Great Leap group to bring various cultures together.

But after the Los Angeles riots in 1992, she had to do something, according to Rafu Shimpo,

Her touring show  A Slice of Rice became “A Slice of Rice, Frijoles, and Greens.” and served to bring people together at a time when it was badly needed following the riots.

Miyamto is being honored as a local hero by KCET, the PBS station in Los Angeles.

Another local hero being honored by KCET is Sosei Shizuye Matsumoto.

The 93-year old is onsidered the foremost master of tea in the United States.

She preserves the art of tea by teaching it to a new generation.
