The Daily: Asian American Political Group Returns to University of Washington

CATEGORIES

Asian Student Commission, University of WashingtonAsian American students at the University of Washington are re-establishing on campus the Asian Coalition of Equality, a civil rights organization dating back to 1969, reports The Daily.

The Coalition disbanded in 1972 after members went their separate ways.

We have over 30 organizations that [the Asian Student Commission] oversees,” senior Tony Vo said, “but we really don’t have a unified political voice.”

ACE is credited with helping to develop U of W’s Asian American Studies program and protesting the construction of the Kingdome near Seattle’s International District.  During the first meeting reestablishing ACE, students learned the history of the group.

“What I got out of the meeting was that we really need to establish an identity for ACE on campus, not just visibility and presence, but also who we are,” Melissa Yang, Asian Student Commission director said. “That if we don’t claim our identity, then other people will, and have, created identities for Asian-Americans.”
