Leaders at the national annual South Asian American Summit urged community members to utilize social media to fight prejudice and for justice, reports Asian Fortune.
Some lawmakers used the Boston Marathon bombing as an argument against immigration reform, but the 400 people at the summit were told they no longer have to watch idly.
“There is an infrastructure now. We have technology now. We can hold the media accountable now. We can hold our government officials accountable now.” said Valarie Kaur, a third generation Sikh American who is a founding director of the social justice organization Groundswell.
The conference in Washington, DC was held April 19 -22. The annual gathering is organized by SAALT, South Asian Americans Leading Together.
“We’re in this thing together,” said Deepa Iyer, executive director of SAALT.
