Medill Reports: Most Asian Americans Live in Integrated Neighborhoods

Asian American Student Assoc, Univ of MiamiA new study by the Pew Research Center has found that most Asian Americans live in integrated neighborhoods, according to Medill Reports.

Pew researchers estimate just 11 percent of the nation’s 17 million Asian Americans live in areas which are predominantly Asian American.

“If you look at Chicago, I think that’s generally true because Asian American communities tend to be more dispersed throughout the city,” said Mark Chiang, associate professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Despite that, there are heavy concentrations of Asians in such communities as Chinatown and suburbs as Skokie in Illinois.

“So it’s not entirely a completely free choice to live wherever they want to live,” said Theresa Mah, the director of Asian-American outreach for Gov. Pat Quinn.  “If they decided to live in the suburbs away from families or resources, then they would have a really tough time.”
