A settlement has been reached between the Department of Justice and a school district in Atlanta, GA over the constant harassment and bullying of a Sikh middle school student, reports Sikh 24.

It’s the first federal settlement ever involving bullying of a Sikh student. The district was accused of doing little to stop it.

The boy whose name is not being released because he is a minor had been the targeting of bullying for years. He was called “Osama,” a “terrorist,” and “curryhead,” and told he has a “bomb on his head,” and to “go back to your country.”

The settlement calls on the Dekalb County School District to implement a safety plan, a Punjabi interpreter will be made available for parents, and anti-harassment training will be provided for students and staff.

This settlement sends a clear message to schools nationwide that we will no longer tolerate inadequate measures to address school bullying. We commend the DOJ and the School District for ensuring the safety of Sikh youth and procuring this historic settlement,” said Gurjot Kaur, Staff Attorney at the Sikh Coalition.
