Six months ago, the Kulessa family home in Jersey Shore, New Jersey was three feet underwater following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy.

“At 11:10 on the night of the 29th we got hit with what was essentially a tsunami. I’ve never seen anything like it,” homeowner Rob Kulessa told ABS CBN.

The family loss thousands of dollars in household items and essentials to Sandy. It was unlike anything they’ve ever witnessed.

“I felt devastated, we got water all over the house, it was up to the window sill, all the first floor is ruined,” wife Arlene Kulessa recalled.

Yet they were told they were not eligible for any financial aid or grants. But despite that, they were considered on of the lucky ones as the homes of many of their neighbors were destroyed.

With the help of family and friends, they have been able to rebuild.

The Filipino American Community Development Center has also offered assistance.

You can read more about that in ABS CBN.
