Economic Times: Indian American Contestants Going for 6th Straight Spelling Bee Championships

CATEGORIES

Spelling BeeNearly 50 Indian American contestants in the National Spelling Bee hope to maintain their community’s dominance when the competition gets underway today in Washington.

Indian Americans have won every competition since 2008, but this year they will be playing under new rules. Each contestant will be required not only to know how to spell the words, but to know the definitions.

“This is a significant change in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, but also a natural one,” Paige Kimble, director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee told the Economic Times.

“It represents a deepening of the Bee’s commitment to its purpose: to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.”

Among the contestants this year is 8-year old Tara Singh, the youngest of the contestants.
