For the first time, international songstress Charice Pempengco has explicitly come out and said she is lesbian, reports the International Business Times.
In a televised interview Sunday in the Philippines with Boy Abunda on the show the Buzz on ABS CBN, Charice said “Opo, tomboy po ako (Yes, I am lesbian).”
Tears streamed from her eyes during the interview. The 21-year old apologized to those fans who could not accept her sexual orientation. She also acknowledged it took months to come out because she worried about the reaction of the public.
Last week, her godfather and journalist Bum Tenorio Jr.wrote for the Phil Star that Charice came out to longtime friends at her 21st birthday party. This is the first public admission of her sexual preference.
Charice also confirmed her sexual preference has caused a rift with her mother, Raquel, but she gave her mom credit for making efforts to accept her identity. Charice reached out to both her mom and younger brother during the interview
“Sorry, Mommy, Carl, but this is the real me,” she said.
