Diverse issues of Higher Ed: New Data Reveals the Asian American Groups Underrepresented at University of California

Much has been made of the high percentage of Asian Americans enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley and other UC campuses.

But a new report out today revealed the Asian American subgroups who are underrepresented on UC campuses, reports the Diverse Issues of Higher Education.

For instance Filipinos made up 25 percent of all AAPI residents in 2010 in California, but had just a 10 percent admission rate. In all nine other AAPI subgroups had admission rates below the aggregate.

“The data reveal a particularly bleak picture,” states the report by National Commission on Asian-American and Pacific Islander Research in Education (CARE).

This is data  made possible because the University of California expanded the number of Asian American subgroups listed on applications from eight to 23.

“Aggregated data provide a misleading statistical portrait of a heterogeneous AAPI population that consists of subgroups that experience divergent trends in educational outcomes,” said the CARE report. ” This is particularly problematic when it conceals significant disparities in opportunities and outcomes for some AAPI subgroups.”

The disaggregated data has lead to new programs targeting many of the underrepresented subgroups.  UC-Berkeley launched a summer educational program designed for Vietnamese, Lao, Hmong and Cambodian high schoolers and community leaders. Programs meeting the mental health needs of Filipino students were also organized.

More information about the report can be found in Diverse Issues of Higher Education.
