The first ever on-line adaptation of a play will make its debut on You Tube’s YOMYOMF Network this weekend, the You Tube Channel for Pop Asian American culture, according to Visual Communications
Yellow Face is a movie version of the Obie award winning play by David Henry Hwang. In it a playwright leads a protest against yellow faced casting only to accidentally cast a white actor in an Asian role.
The movie version had its first public screening at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film festival and will air Saturday and Sunday on YOMYOMF.
“This adaptation is really a hybrid, in that we don’t conceal the theatrical roots of the material at all,” said writer-director Jeff Liu. “If anything, we embrace it. The challenge was always to find a combination of theatrical, cinematic, and YouTube languages and devices that would somehow cohere into a whole. I’ve actually tried to keep the play as intact as possible.”
