The Moderate Voice: The First Asian American Ever to Be Nominated for President

CATEGORIES

Hiram FongThis may be difficult for some to believe. But the first Asian American ever to be nominated for President was a Republican, according to the The Moderate Voice.

Hiram Fong ran for the Republican nomination for president  in 1964 and 1968. His candidacy was more symbolic than anything else. His campaign was pretty much limited to his home state of Hawaii where he served as U.S. Senator from 1959 to 1977.

Fong was the first Asian American Senator in history.

“Being the first Asian in there, I was very, very careful. I knew that if I did anything that was in the line of dereliction of duty, why it would shame me and my family. It would also shame those of my ethnic background and it would shame the people of Hawaii.”

You can read more about Fong’s life and career in the Moderate Voice.
