Washington Post: Housing Discrimination Prevalent Against Asians, Blacks & Hispanics

CATEGORIES

HousingA new government report finds that housing discrimination in the United States against people of color remains problematic, according to the Washington Post.

The study found black homeowners were shown 18 percent fewer homes by real estate agents than white buyers. Asian Americans were shown 19 percent fewer units.

Minority renters didn’t fare any better. African Americans were told about 11 percent fewer rentals and shown 4 percent fewer rentals. Asian Americans were told about 10 percent fewer rentals and shown 7 percent fewer. Hispanics were told about 12 percent fewer units and shown 7 percent fewer units than whites.

“Fewer minorities today may be getting the door slammed in their faces, but we continue to see evidence of housing discrimination that can limit a family’s housing, economic and educational opportunities,” said Shaun Donovan, secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
