Asian Americans remain the fastest growing population in the United States, reports the Press of Atlantic City.

Nationally, the number of people describing themselves as Asian or Asian American grew by 6 percent from 2010 to 2012.

The numbers from the American Community Survey show there are 18.9 million Asian Americans in this country.

New Jersey saw the same growth rate to 858,000.

Most of the growth is being fueled by immigration. New Jersey is particularly attractive to Asians because of its location and the availability of entry level jobs.

“We’re close to the shore, where people come in, and another reason is that they have a lot of relatives here,” said Richard Perniciaro, director of the Center for Regional and Business Research at Atlantic Cape Community College, New Jersey.

The large presence of the hospitality industry in the state also makes it easier for new arrivals to find entry level jobs.

You can read how the trends in the Asian population different from other ethnic groups in the Press of Atlantic City.
