Fox News is reporting that blind Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng is accusing New York University of giving into pressure from the Chinese government and forcing him off campus.
Chen began working at NYU a year ago after escaping house arrest in China.
“The work of the Chinese Communists within academic circles in the United States is far greater than what people imagine, and some scholars have no option but to hold themselves back,” he said. “Academic independence and academic freedom in the United States are being greatly threatened by a totalitarian regime.”
A previous story in the New York Post quoted an unnamed source who said NYU is working to establish a campus in Shanghai and may be feeling pressure from Chinese authorities to oust Chen.
NYU had denied the allegations and said Chen’s appointment has always been for just one year.
“We are very discouraged to learn of Mr. Chen’s statement, which contains a number of speculations about the role of the Chinese government in NYU’s decision-making that are both false and contradicted by the well-established facts,” NYU spokesman John Beckman said.
