It’s a forgotten chapter in Little Tokyo’s history.
The Japanese American community in Los Angeles became a virtual ghost town when Japanese Americans were rounded up and sent to incarceration camps during World War II.
Los Angeles Magazine reports an influx of African Americans then moved in and the neighborhood thrived for three years from 1943 to 1946 as Bronzeville.
That little period of time is being remembered in a multi-disciplinary art project at LA Artcore—Union Center for the Arts in Little Tokyo. It was put together by Kathie Foley-Meyer who moved to Los Angeles from the East coast in 1987 and immersed herself into uncovering the history over the last two years.
“If you didn’t see it, if you weren’t there to witness it, then you probably don’t know it even existed,” said Foley-Meyer.
