Inequalities: Black & White Perceptions of Asian Americans

CATEGORIES

ChinatownA recent article by Jun Xu and Jennifer Lee examines how blacks and whites perceive Asian Americans.

According to the blog Inequalities, a survey analyzed by Xu and Lee found Asian Americans are applauded by some as the “model minority”  , yet are marginalized as outsiders.   Asian Americans continue to be regarded as foreigners in the United States.

Xu and Lee asked blacks and whites to rate Asian Americans in terms of family commitment, intelligence, nonviolence, wealth and work ethic (measures of racial valorization) and in terms of patriotism, acceptance within one’s neighborhood, attitudes toward intermarriage, and general feelings toward.

Many rates all racial groups as being equal in all areas, but those willing to discriminate rated Asian Americans higher in family commitment, intelligence, non-violence, wealth and work ethic. But lower in the desire to have Asians inter-marry or be in the same neighborhood, and perceived patriotism.

Most blacks rated Asian Americans equal in all areas, but among those that did not, they tended to have a less favorable feeling toward Asian Americans compared to whites.
