Times of India: Lawmakers Push for Postage Stamp Commemorating Diwali

DiwaliRep. Ami Bera (D-CA), the only Indian American currently in Congress and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu American in Congress (D-HI) are urging the U.S. Postal Service to issue a stamp commemorating Diwali, the Festival of Lights.

The Times of India reports they are being joined by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY),

“The fight to have the Postal Service issue a Diwali commemorative stamp can be decided next week,” Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney said.

“For those who care about a Diwali stamp, it’s imperative that they write the Citizens Advisory Stamp Commission now,” Malony said.

The commission is set to meet July 18th.

For Hindus, Diwali is one of the most important festivals of the year.  Small clay lamps filled with oil are lit to signify the triumph of good over evil.
