The Human Rights Campaign joined Asian American middle and high school students about a discussion on bullying and how to prevent it.

The discussion was held during a panel at the annual convention of the Organization of Chinese Americans in Washington, D.C. last week.

The Human Rights Campaign describes itself as the largest civil rights organization in the Lesbian, Gay, Transgender & Bisexual communities.

Discussion ranged from bullying based on race and religion to sexual orientation.

Tiffani Sykhammountry of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network talked about being bullied in high school because she was gay. The experience motivated her to start a Safe Schools campaign at her high school.

Students also heard about the discrimination Sikhs face simply because their long hair and the turbans they wear. Their hair is considered part of their faith.

Hyacinth Alvaran, Diversity Program Manager for the Human Rights Campaign, talked about how youth are taught to be bullies through stereotyping. Participants were taught that they must choose between being a bystander and watch the bullying take place or to befriend those who are victimized by bullies.
