The NY Times is reporting that New York City Comptroller John Liu has been denied matching funds in his quest to become mayor of New York City.
The denial by the New York Campaign Finance Board of $3.5 million is a major blow to the Chinese American candidate who has been embroiled in finance controversies since the beginning of his campaign.
All the other major candidates have qualified for matching funds. Liu who has consistently placed 5th in the mayor’s race in recent polls, will be hard pressed to come up with the money to play catch up.
Two of Liu’s former associates were convicted by a federal grand jury three months ago in a campaign finance scheme.
