LA Times: Lack of Language Assistance for Asian Voters at Polling Places Blasted. @aajc_aajc

voteA report released today by Asian Americans Advancing Justice found bilingual polling assistance was missing at many polls across the country, reports the Los Angele Times.

Asian Americans Advancing Justice sent poll workers to 900 polling places in 14 jurisdictions with a high concentration of Asian Americans.

It found one out of four polling places lacked bilingual assistance which is mandated under the Voting Rights Act where more than 5 percent speak another language.

Nearly half of the precincts lacked translation materials.

“There are gaps in language assistance, but there are some good things that election officials are doing,” said Eugene Lee, director of the Voting Rights Project for Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Los Angeles.

Los Angeles won high marks because its bilingual poll workers actively sought to assist voters. San Francisco won praise for having only one polling place that didn’t offer bilingual assistance.
