Oregonian: Gen Shinseki Honors Members of the 442nd, 100th Battalion & MIS

Congressional Gold MedalGeneral Eric Shinseki, the Secretary of Veteran Affairs, today called the story of the Japanese Americans who served with distinction in World War II, “a uniquely American story,” reported the Oregonian.

“We all have a personal responsibility to share their stories and not let it pass with them,” said Shinseki.  Speaking directly to the veterans he said “thank you for your wonderful example of how to live your lives.”

He made his remarks during ceremonies celebrating the arrival to Portland, Oregon of the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to members of the 442nd, 100 Battalion and Military Intelligence Service.

They fought in battle for the United States even after it herded them and their families into incarceration camps.
