SF Chronicle: Court Upholds California Ban on Shark Fin

CATEGORIES

sharkEnvironmentalists won a victory today when the Federal Appeals Court upheld California  ban on the sale of shark fins. reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

The ban which went into effect last month had been criticized as being discriminatory to Chinese Americans.

The court found opponents “presented no persuasive evidence that the California Legislature‘s real intent was to discriminate against Chinese Americans rather than to accomplish the law’s stated humanitarian, conservationist and health goals.”

The ruling is also a defeat for the Obama administration which just last month came out against the ban as conflicting with federal law.

The court’s ruling made no mention of the argument from the White House.

Have you’ve been to a Chinese banquet since the ban went into effect? Did you miss having shark fin?
