Daily Targum: Why @RutgersU Needs Asian American Studies

RutgersAs Kermit says on Sesame Street, it’s not easy being green.

It’s not easy being a minority either, especially one that can feel invisible.

That’s how Nomin Ujyediin describes her life at Rutgers University.

“It’s not easy being so invisible in your own country. Especially when there is so much history and diversity to counter that erasure.,” she writes in the Daily Targum

But for a brief moment, that feeling of being invisible disappeared for her when she took a course on Asian American history,

“Even for just 80 minutes per week, we were finally at the center of the conversation,” Ujyediin says. “Unfortunately, because there is no major, minor or department for Asian American studies, there are few other avenues to further our interest in the subject.”

Rutgers has a student population that is 22 percent Asian, yet the University has no Asian American Studies Department.

You can read Ujyediin’s thoughts on this in the Daily Targum.
