The New York chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations or CAIR is condemning the apparently bias-motivated attack on a Sikh professor from Columbia University.
“New York’s religious and political leaders must speak out forcefully against the type of bigotry that leads to hate attacks on people of all faiths and backgrounds,” said CAIR-NY Operations Coordinator Sadyia Khalique.
The Huffington Post reports Dr. Prabhjot Singh was attacked Saturday night in New York City after unknown suspects shouted anti-Muslim statements, then knocked him down and punched him several times in the face.
He was hospitalized at Mt. Sinai Hospital where he is recovering from injuries described as severe, but non-life threatening.
A friend who visited Doctor Singh quoted him as saying the suspects shouted “get Osama” and “terrorist.”
Just last year Dr. Singh wrote on op-ed in the NY Times on the importance of gathering more information about hate crimes against Sikhs.
Also this weekend, CAIR posted a video from a pro Democracy rally in which a Muslim woman from New Jersey is accosted by a man who calls her a “f**king terrorist.” The video shows the man being hauled away by police.
