Ming-na WenActress Ming Na Wen who plays Melinda May in the new hit series, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has related with her character from the moment she auditioned for the part, reports the Los Angeles Times.

She tells the Times she got over her nervousness about meeting with director Josh Whedon by channeling her character.

“I remember having to go somewhere where I was invincible and I could do this and that’s pretty much the character, really. I had to go in there with a warrior attitude. Everything clicked, they were very welcoming. I felt like I did a great audition and the next thing I knew, I just got the offer.”

The series just two weeks old is predicted by many to be the new hit of the season.

Based on the Avengers, the story is about agent Phil Coulson who puts together a band of misfits and outsiders to take on the world’s global problems. There are hints that Coulson and Ming Na’s character,Melinda May. have had a history together and that May is being given a second chance.

It’s a theme that have run through many of Whedon’s past projects.

“[His characters] were outsiders, trying to find family and a group of people where they felt they belonged,” said Wen.  “Those are the stories I related to so much — that and the fact that it was all fantastical and really cool,” Wen said. “My parents ran a restaurant, my brother was totally the jock athletic type, I grew up in white suburbia and never felt like I fit in.”
