The American Planning Association has named San Francisco’s Chinatown as one of the ten “great” neighborhoods in the country, reports the SF Chronicle.
The Association noted the community’s activism and the quick rebuilding of Chinatown after the 1906 earthquake.
“There was a largely purposeful process that went into staking a claim after the big earthquake – people saying, ‘This is going to be a place that remains a place of settlement for people from Asia,’ ” David Morley, senior research associate of the group said. “On a smaller scale, community-based organizations have worked with the city on efforts of all kinds to support planning in the area and speak up for people who live and work there.”
