You know you’ve really stuck your foot in your mouth when you find yourself explaining what you said one year earlier.
That’s the predicament Lucy Liu found herself in during an interview with the Filipino publication, the Inquirer.
What probably started off as an interview scheduled for Liu’s publicists so she could promote her show Elementary
turned into a series of questions about commetns she made about Filipinos last year on the Late Show with David Letterman .
Letterman asked her if she enjoyed running indoors or outdoors. Here’s what she said.
An uproar followed and Liu quickly apologized. But the damage had been done and she’s still being asked about it a year later.
“It’s strange, because people don’t know what your history is like,” said Liu. “Being Chinese, I grew up with racism all the time. So it’s a sensitivity factor.
“My best friends when I was growing up were Filipinos. They would actually say, ‘Oh my God, you look Filipino,’ when I was dark. They were joking about it. You take that into context in your life. But, when you look at it on a broader perspective, you realize that people don’t know anything about you. They don’t know that you grew up with Filipinos as your best friends.”
You can read about the second season of her hit series, Elementary, on the Inquirer.
RE: @LucyLiu still explaining offensive comments about #Filipinos: Why you expect much from stupid white washed sellout
RE: Lucy Liu Explains offensive comments about Filipinos: Your absolutely right, Ric. Just another dumb, wonky-eyed Asian sellout kissing ass to a white man. I like how she even uses the white man’s excuse……”My best friends are (insert ethnicity) so how can I be racist?”
Inquirer: Lucy Liu still explaining offensive comment: i really don’t know why americans like this stupid bitch lucy liu. Look at her, shes not beautiful at all she looks like ugly and old. She dont act asian. Other asians are better than her.
