Governor Jerry Brown signed a series of bills this week expanding the rights of undocumented immigrants in California, reports Examiner.com.
“While Washington waffles on immigration, California’s forging ahead,” he said. “I’m not waiting.”
Among the eight bills he signed into law is one that allows undocumented immigrants to have a California driver’s license, another would allow the undocumented to be licensed as lawyers and a third would prevent detaining someone undocumented for more than 48 hours if they’ve only committed a minor crime.
Asian Americans Advancing Justice=-Asian Law Caucus in San Francisco says the latter would prevent the detention of 20,000 immigrants a year by federal authorities.
Opponents say the bills are sending the wrong message. You can read more about that and the new laws in Examiner.com.
