RNS: Skit by White Evangelicals Upsets Asian American Christians

CATEGORIES

Exponential For the second time in less than a month, images depicting Asians and displayed by white evangelicals are sparking controversy in the Asian American Christian community, reports the  Religion News Service.

Last month, an image of the Red Guard posted by pastor Rick Warren on his Facebook page received such a strong backlash the pastor took the image down and apologized.

This time a conference by Exponential and hosted by Warren’s Saddleback Church is at the center of the controversy.

In a skit performed at the conference, a pastor begins speaking in a Chinese accent with chop suey music playing in the background. They go into a parody of the Karate Kid and bow to each other.

“I know they are not trying to be offensive,” Rev. Christine Lee said. “I was actually trying to talk myself out of (being offended), but I kept coming back to this question: Would they have done this with black people?”

A group of Asian Americans Christians is drafting a letter in response to the skit.

This is the latest incident in a long line of offensive depictions of Asian Americans in the evangelical community.

You can read more about that in Religion News Service.
