I’m trying to figure out what kind of Yahoo at Yahoo would come up with a headline like this?
Dogs in Vietnam: Not Just for Dinner Anymore
The story published in Yahoo from Reuters was about a new pet resort catering to dogs. (update: Reuters.com used the same headline. So apparently the headline came from Reuters. But I still say Yahoo shouldn’t have repeated it)
It seems many in the US have a preoccupation with the culinary choices of some in the South East Asian nation.
Granted, the canine has shown up on the dinner menus of some in Asia. But must every story play up that up so much?
The writer from Reuters also seemed to be fixated on that angle, drawing a contrast between the pet resort and some dinner options.
LATEST STORIES
Let me remind both Reuters and Yahoo that there’s a nursery rhyme popular with American children that goes like this.
Mary had a little lamb,
Little lamb, little lamb,
Mary had a little lamb,
Its fleece was white as snowAnd everywhere that Mary went,
Mary went, Mary went,
Everywhere that Mary went
The lamb was sure to go
Sure hasn’t stopped Americans from serving lamb chops for dinner, has it?
Is the headline racist? That’s open to debate.
Is it culturally insensitive? Definitely. What are your thoughts on this matter?
