Two exhibits which just closed in New York City took on the challenge of drawing connections between the discrimination experienced by two distinct communities, Asian Americans and African Americans, reports NY Amsterdam News.
The exhibits were entitled “The Japanese American Internment Project: If they came for me today … East Coast Stories” and “Spirit of Community: Japanese American Artists.”
Much has been told about the experience of Japanese Americans on the West Coast who were uprooted from their homes and taken to what some have called concentration camps, but what about the Japanese Americans on the East Coast?
The exhibition attempted to fill that gap as well as seek common ground with African Americans. 400 people recently attended to celebrate the exhibit including an equal number of Japanese and African Americans.
They also marked the 25th anniversary of the Civil Liberties Act and the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington.
