A landlord has refused to pay the compensation owed to an elderly Chinese American family (pictured) who has lived in their San Francisco apartment for 34 years and now faces eviction, reports the SF Examiner.
Gum Gee Lee, 73, and her husband, Poon Heung Lee, 79, along with their disabled 48-year old daughter had until yesterday to get out of their apartment.
The landlord is getting out of the rental market and has served notice to the family which has been fighting their eviction for more than a year.
The sheriff’s department has indicated it will forcibly remove the family by Wednesday. The eviction has been delayed several times, first by protestors and then by Mayor Ed Lee who wants to make sure the family finds affordable housing before being evicted.
Landlord Mathew Miller hasn’t been willing to pay the nearly $13,000 owed to the family for relocation costs, but Miller’s attorney said he has “full confidence an agreeable arrangement will be finalized shortly.”
