Charlene Kazner has joined the battle against breast cancer in a big way.
KABC reports Kazner has become the first Pacific Islander to donate her breast cancer tissue for research.
Healthy tissue is needed by researchers to compare with diseased tissue so they can study how to prevent the deadly disease.
Most of the 3,000 people who have donated their tissue have been white. Researchers say they need a more diverse sample so they can learn why tissue from various ethnic groups acts differently.
“Every one of those ethnic populations may have another clue to what is going on with breast cancer, and we don’t want to be just looking for how does breast cancer happen in Caucasian women,” said Lisa Wolter, executive director of the Orange County chapter of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.
