Sampan: Asian Americans need to open up about sex, say panelists

safe sexSex still remains a taboo subject among many Asian Americans, according to a panel put on by Asian Sisters Participating in Reaching Excellence and Boston University’s Alpha Kappa Delta Phi.

Sampan reports the panelists asserted many Asian Americans still have difficulty talking about sex and there’s a lack of knowledge about it.

One panelist said that was certainly true of her parents who ironically were both working in the medical profession.

Another said shame placed on sex and mental illness in the community made it difficult for Asian Americans to seek professional help.

One statistic that stood out is that less than 50 percent of Asian Americans use condoms.

You can read more about what the panelists said in Sampan.

What about your own experience. Did you learn about sex from your parents, school or peers? How have you discussed sex with your children?
