Huff Post: Asian American TV news reporter acknowledges having cosmetic eye surgery

CATEGORIES

Ko ImAn Asian American television reporter who works in Washington DC today acknowledged in a  Huffington Post blog that she’s had cosmetic Asian eye surgery just months after CBS’ Julie Chen made the same admission.

According to her Linked In profile, Ko Im  works at both WUSA-TV and as a freelance news reporter for CBS News.

She said she had the surgery before she worked in television and after she graduated from college as a gift from from her parents.

Im wrote:

The size of my eyes did not significantly change. After all, the goal was to make the shift look natural. But gone was the heavily-hooded look at the hands of a plastic surgeon in Korea’s famous district of Apgujeong… But like Chen, I wonder: Had I not gone under the knife, would I be where I am today?

Coincidentally, Im revealed she had plastic surgery on the same day WJLA-TV aired a special report on the  procedure, especially controversial in the Asian American community.

“She’s (Julie Chen) a great role model in terms of professionally,” said Justine Chen of Washington, DC. “In terms of an Asian-American woman, I have mixed feelings about her.”

But Dr. Suzanne Doud Galli, a cosmetic surgeon. takes exception to those who think Asian Americans who have the surgery are rejecting their look and culture.

“No one comes in and says ‘Oh, I want to look more American,’ or ‘I want to blend in better. They just want to accentuate what they already have.”

You can read Im’s explanation of why she had the surgery and what it did for her in the Huffington Post.  Then you can read both sides of the controversy on WJLA-TV and in the taped report below. Share your thoughts below.
