Mail Online: Study finds cultural upbringing impacts what we remember

Asian American Student Assoc, Univ of MiamiResearchers have found that way we are brought up impacts the kind of things we remember, reports Mail Online.

According to a study from Brandeis University, people in the US remember objects better, like color of the decorations or objects on a cake.

People from East Asia tend to remember their interaction with people more, like who served the cake or who they danced with.

“Your culture influences what you perceive to be important around you,’ said Angela Gutchess, an assistant professor of psychology. ‘If your culture values social interactions, you will remember those interactions better than a culture that values individual perceptions. Culture really shapes your memory.’

The study did not break down Asian Americans. Would Asian Americans tend to remember objects or people better? Does it matter how long you’ve been in the United States. Would second or third generation who are supposedly more Americanized remember objects, and first generation more likely to remember interaction with people?
What’s your experience?
